Choosing commercial air filters: fit, performance and quantity
In this guide
Keep nominal and actual dimensions distinct
Use efficiency as part of the specification
Identify the filter type and installation
A filter request needs more than a familiar size and an efficiency label. The frame must fit the intended housing, the filter type must suit the installation and its performance needs to be considered with the equipment's airflow requirements. Record what is installed and what the system requires before comparing replacements.
For a building with several units, organize the request by filter location. Similar-looking filters may differ in depth, actual dimensions, frame construction or specification. Keep quantities with each exact record rather than combine unlike filters into one line.
Keep nominal and actual dimensions distinct
Nominal dimensions describe a filter's stated size class; actual dimensions describe the physical item. Record both where the manufacturer provides them. Check the required depth and the intended frame or housing arrangement as well as length and width.
An example in the AirGuard DP-Green manufacturer table shows why the distinction matters: DP13-STD2-205 is listed as nominal 24 × 24 × 2 inches with actual dimensions 23⅜ × 23⅜ × 1¾ inches. This is one specific manufacturer's configuration, not a universal conversion for every filter labeled 24 × 24 × 2. Use the exact product table and the equipment requirement.
| Field | Keep in the request |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer and part | Exact product code and size configuration |
| Nominal size | The labeled size class |
| Actual dimensions | Physical length, width and depth from the product record |
| Housing requirement | The documented fit and frame arrangement |
| Quantity | Number needed by unit or filter bank |
Use efficiency as part of the specification
EPA describes MERV as a filter-efficiency rating based on a consensus standard. It is one selection input, alongside the filter's construction and the system's requirements. A requested MERV level does not establish that a filter will fit or that its airflow characteristics suit the installation.
For a change in filter type or efficiency, gather the equipment manufacturer's guidance and the filter performance information. EPA's technical summary discusses how media area and construction affect airflow resistance; MERV alone does not define the pressure drop of a particular product. Ask for evaluation of the intended filter in the system rather than assume that all filters sharing a rating behave the same way.
Identify the filter type and installation
Record whether the request concerns a pleated panel, bag or pocket filter, rigid-box filter or another documented type. Include the frame and connection requirements available for the installation. Depth, pocket arrangement or header construction can matter when products are compared.
The goal is to describe an existing requirement or a planned change clearly. Avoid turning a general desire for cleaner air into an automatic order for a different filter family. Keep filter selection connected to the equipment and the intended application.
Check packs, pieces and replacement quantities
Count the filters needed for each identified location and keep unlike sizes on separate lines. Then check the listed selling unit. A catalog amount may refer to a pack, while a replacement plan may state the number of individual filters. The manufacturer shipping carton and the seller's actual package are separate pieces of information.
For example, if a confirmed selling unit contains four filters and the work needs eight matching filters, the request is for two packs of that exact unit. If the package count is not established, describe the number of individual filters required and ask for the selling configuration in the quote. Keep any spare quantity distinct from the immediate replacement quantity.
| Location | Product requirement | Work quantity | Selling unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Named unit or filter bank | Exact type and dimensions | Individual filters needed for the work | Pieces per confirmed pack |
| Planned spare stock | Same exact specification | Additional individual filters requested | Pack or individual-item configuration |
Carry selection information into maintenance
Save the installed filter specification and the replacement date under the unit record. Use manufacturer requirements and the condition information collected during maintenance to plan the next review. DOE guidance connects filter condition and loading with replacement planning rather than treating every site as identical.
For the next request, send the exact filter record, quantities and any proposed specification change. Clean AC LLC can discuss filter supplies alongside preventive maintenance and the equipment involved.
Frequently asked questions
Does the nominal size guarantee fit?
No. Keep the actual product dimensions and the housing requirement with the request. Nominal size labels should not replace exact product information.
Can I choose by MERV alone?
MERV describes efficiency, while fit, construction and airflow requirements remain part of selection. A change should be evaluated for the system and the specific filter product.
Why does the quote request ask about packs?
The work may need a number of individual filters while the product is supplied in a pack. Establish the selling unit before comparing quantities or amounts.
